Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about dog training in Dallas? You're in the right place. Below are the questions Agatha hears most often from dog owners — whether they're considering their first training session or trying to understand the force-free approach. If you don't see your question answered here, call or text directly at (281) 685-1321 and Agatha will be happy to help.
What is force-free dog training?
Force-free training — also called positive reinforcement training — means we never use pain, fear, or intimidation to change your dog's behavior. No prong collars, no shock collars, no punishment. Instead, we reward the behaviors we want to see more of, which makes those behaviors happen more often naturally.
This approach is backed by decades of behavioral science and produces results that are more reliable and longer-lasting than punishment-based methods. It also builds a genuine bond of trust between you and your dog — which makes the whole experience of owning a dog more enjoyable for everyone.
How long will it take to train my dog?
Dog training is an ongoing process. Most dogs will show improvement after an initial lesson, but ultimately training improves communication and understanding between you and your dog. Depending on your goals it can be quick — establishing baseline rules for co-habitation — or it can take longer, like training for an agility competition.
Our most popular program is 3 weeks long and covers basic communication between you and your pup, a personalized curriculum including behavior modifications, and useful everyday cues like sit, stay and leave it.
Will my dog gain weight from training with treats?
No. Most of the dogs we train can be rewarded with the same amount of food they are already getting. The difference is that instead of getting a big bowl of delicious food just because the clock strikes 5, we are using some of that food and some higher value treats to reward behaviors we like! This will make the behaviors happen more often.
Aren’t treats just bribes?
No. With positive reinforcement training we will be paying your dog with something they value. We start with primary reinforcers like food but we also use games, walks and other things they enjoy to achieve success. We will pair something they like with something we like to make it happen more often.
What can I expect from the initial visit?
We will set up a time to review your goals either via zoom or in person. You will learn about our force-free methods and how to use them successfully. We will do a thorough review of your home set-up and what you want from dog training. We will also talk about immediate changes that will set your dog training on the path you want.
How much does dog training cost in Dallas?
At Hound Habits, our packages range from $500 to $800 depending on the level of support you need. The Day Training package ($800) has Agatha training your dog directly over three weeks. The Canine Coaching (in person) and Virtual Coaching packages ($500 each) are designed for owners who want to learn how to train their dog themselves with professional guidance.
All packages include an onboarding lesson and a follow-up session one month after you finish — so you're never left on your own. Private dog training in Dallas typically runs $100–$165 per session, so our packages represent strong value for the level of support included
Do you offer puppy training in Dallas?
Yes — puppy training is Hound Habits' specialties. The Day Training package is particularly popular for new puppy owners, as it lets a certified professional handle the foundational training while you focus on bonding with your new dog. We work with puppies from around 8 weeks old and tailor every session to where your puppy is developmentally. Starting early makes a huge difference — the habits formed in the first few months last a lifetime.
What areas of Dallas do you serve?
Hound Habits offers in-home dog training across Dallas, TX — including Oak Cliff, Preston Hollow, University Park, Highland Park, Lakewood, Uptown, Perry Heights, Bluffview, Oak Lawn, East Dallas, Kessler, and Bishop Arts. If you're not sure whether your neighborhood is covered, just call or text (281) 685-1321 and we'll let you know.
Virtual coaching sessions are available to dog owners anywhere in the world.
How is Hound Habits different from a board-and-train program?
Board-and-train programs send your dog away for weeks and return them "trained" — but the training often doesn't transfer to your home environment because your dog learned to respond to a stranger in a different setting, not to you in your house.
At Hound Habits, all training happens in your home, where your dog actually lives. We also train you — not just your dog — so you understand how to maintain and build on the results after the program ends. The goal isn't a dog that performs for a trainer. It's a dog that works beautifully for your whole family, in your home, for life.
