Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to train my dog?
Dog training, is a process that is ongoing. Most dogs will show improvement after an initial lesson but ultimately, dog training will improve communication and understanding between you and your dog. Depending on what your goals are training can be quick, establishing baseline rules for co-habitation; or it can take years, training for an agility competition. Our most popular program is 6 sessions and covers basic communication between you and your pup, a personalized curriculum that will include some behavior modifications as well as useful everyday cues like sit and stay.
Will my dog gain weight from training with treats?
No. Most of the dogs we train can be rewarded with the same amount of food they are already getting. The difference is that instead of getting a big bowl of delicious food just because the clock strikes 5, we are using some of that food and some higher value treats to reward behaviors we like! This will make them happen more often.
Aren’t treats just bribes?
No. With positive reinforcement training we will be paying your dog with something they value. We start with primary reinforcers like food but we also use games, walks and other things they enjoy to achieve success. After all most of us don’t work for free.
What can I expect from the initial visit?
We will set up a time to review your goals either via zoom or in person. You will learn about our force-free methods and how to use them successfully. We will do a thorough review of your home set up and what you want from dog training.
